Yes, freeze

Yes, it looks like a definite freeze. The time is 19:47 and the temperature is 0.7 - apparent temperature is -3.1. They are predicting -4 in the morning but I think it might go lower given the current temperature.

Quite a change from Istanbul - I looked at the Istanbul forecast.

  1. I think I have worked out why the comments appear and I will try to do better.

I went to panorama 1453 today. It is incredible the amount of noise a class of eight year olds can make. Listening to a film is impossible. As is appreciating a diorama while they are running around chasing one another. Fortunately they went away after a short time.

Apart from that interlude the exhibition was good. It was interesting to go outside and compare the walls as they are today with the diorama.

The Greek Orthodox community welcomed the Turks as that allowed them to be separate to the Catholic Church. Much was made of the sack of constantinople by the crusaders. The ottomans provided a very benevolent rule.

Another thing I won't miss when I come home is Turkish toilets. They generally have water all over the floor. Often there is a sit down toilet as well as the squat toilets (which have even more water on the floor if that's possible) and the Turks hate sit downs so often I am pushed to the front as I am assumed to want it.

  2. Just make sure you stay warm. I don't want you to turn into an icicle.

  3. I realize that I haven't really told you about where I am staying. The old wooden houses of Istanbul like this are generally being restored, and then used as hotels. This is typical and is a dark stained building with the upper floor having parts that jut out into the street. My suite has a jutting section which is part of the bedroom area and has two windows. The bedroom has a queen and a single bed.. The sitting area has one window, several chairs, a coffee table and a very small antique style sofa,a writing table and a sink area with a microwave, a jug, hot plate and a toaster. Under the sink is an assortment of eating equipment and some washing up stuff. The bathroom has a bath\shower which is very high. The floors are dark stained wood and the high ceilings arepainted with motifs. Breakfast is in a conservatory looking out on mass planting. It's only about a metre deep, but gives the illusion of a garden. The host is fantastic and a number of his staff have good English, so any problem is quickly dealt with.

It really is much better than anywhere else I have stayed. To top it off, the neighborhood is relatively quiet.
